QuickPlay Media Leverages Digital Element’s IP Intelligence To Provide Geographic Rights Management for Premium Mobile TV Services

Geolocation Technology Enables QuickPlay Media To Restrict Access to Content Based on Mobile Handset Location

ATLANTA – (November 11, 2009) – Digital Element, the leader in IP Intelligence solutions, today announced that QuickPlay Media, the premier provider of solutions that manage the business of mobile video, is leveraging the company’s geolocation technology to provide secure distribution of TV episodes over mobile Wi-Fi connections for QuickPlay’s PrimeTime2Go™ service.

Delivering access to the hottest shows from major networks and cable providers, PrimeTime2Go enables subscribers to download full-length episodes of their favorite TV shows to their mobile devices, and then watch them where and when they want.  Because the content is currently available only to viewers in the United States, QuickPlay selected Digital Element’s technology to manage subscriber access to premium content by geographic region.

“Using IP Intelligence tools, we can place additional layers of geographic access restrictions on our premium content,” said Kavi Maharajh, Chief Architect, QuickPlay Media. “The service helps us allow or deny access to PrimeTime2Go content based on a mobile handset’s physical location, ensuring full compliance with regional coding restrictions. With a strong reputation for delivering quality geographic rights management solutions, Digital Element was an ideal choice for us.”

As noted in Nielsen’s recently published Three Screen Report, the number of people watching mobile video has increased 70 percent in the last year alone, and 15 million people subscribing to mobile video in the United States spend on average three hours and 15 minutes each month watching video on their mobile devices. Not to mention, the scale of the ongoing fight against piracy remains still globally substantial. According to a June survey report conducted by Futuresource, 8 percent of all consumers in Britain, France, Germany and the United States admit to downloading video illegally from the Internet.

“With the rise in mobile video consumption, companies such as QuickPlay are looking for ways to ensure they meet the distribution restrictions of their content partners,” said Rob Friedman, executive vice president, Digital Element. “Our technology has long been used to manage digital rights based on user location, and we expect to see a continued increase in interest among providers of mobile content services.”

Independently verified to be more than 99.99 percent accurate at a country level and 95 percent accurate at a city level worldwide, Digital Element’s IP Intelligence and geotargeting technology provides information such as geographic location (country, region, state, city and zip code), connection type, Internet Service Provider (ISP), proxy information, and more.
